Leadership Coach Reacts: Mr Umbrage

JASON -

What's up guys?

So this is your leadership coach, Jason, and I got a lot of requests about doing a reaction video on the CEO of SPH during his press conference.

So let's go!

CEO of SPH -

I interject.

Honestly, I take umbrage at your first question.

JASON -

Alright, hang on, hang on, hang on.

First and foremost, when it comes to a leader, the main thing that you want to do is to be able to communicate to your guys, to the people that you're talking to.

It's not what you say, it's what they hear.

It's not what you communicate, it's what they they listen to.

It's not what you teach, it's what they learn.

So when it comes to using a big word like "umbrage", even my father who like really reads the dictionary, really doesn't know that as well.

So it's really what one percent or even less than one percent of people actually know that.

So what you want to do, is that you want to be on par with the people that you're talking to.

If you're too far away you lose them, and when you lose them you can't gain that trust they don't understand you, they think you're too far away, very hard for them to think that you empathize in your journey as a leader.

CEO OF SPH -

There are reporters from here who receive substantial funding from various sources.

I don't believe that you will describe yourself as bowing to the needs of advertisers in doing your job.

So I think that, please okay, I would say at least for SPH probably you know, we have always had advertising and we have never, never conceded the needs of the advertisers, alright?

So we always continue to provide fair, reliable, credible, reporting.

So in reporting the answer to this, I will tell you first that the question, the fact that you dare to question -

JASON -

Alright, okay.

So this part about using choice of words.

Communication is about many things, one of them is words that you use.

"Umbrage" and "Dare" shouldn't be in your vocabulary.

If you say that you dare to do something, that means that you are almost questioning them - "Hey, actually why are you doing this you? You know who I am or not?"

So it's about choice of words.

Be careful about that.

Change that word to something else.

CEO OF SPH -

For, in your words ah.

JASON -

Okay let's go back.

Check that out, check that out.

Pointing!

So who points?

Parents.

Parents point to children because you're wrong.

Teacher's point.

But as a leader, we don't point, we can do so many other things.

Remember, communication is not only words, but also body language.

Open up your hands, open up and then talk to them this way.

It's so much better than just pointing.

Pointing kind of tells them that "Hey I'm higher up and you are lower than me.

So never point.

CEO OF SPH -

In your words ah, conceding.

JASON -

Look at his teeth.

*grits teeth*

Like he's a bit angry.

This is a press conference, so you need to know that everybody's watching you.

So these kind of small little things of body language is so important.

CEO OF SPH -

To the worst advertiser, I take umbrage at that comment because I don't believe that even where you come from -

JASON -

That looks like a dare.

Like *challenging action*.

Like "wow", like "simi taiji" (what is your problem).

So it's that kind of thing that we don't want right?

Don't challenge.

If you want to challenge, challenge in a very gentlemanly way.

CEO OF SPH -

You concede, alright, in doing your job.

You do not concede to the needs of advertisers.

So I must call this out.

Chairman is a gentleman, I'm not.

SPH, the purpose of doing this is make sure that SPH media will continue to do the job that it has done so well for so long!

JASON -

Wow okay, that sounds like a speech from a teacher scolding a student or something.

Or maybe a general talking to a recruit.

Actually he is a general, what am I talking about.

Alright, so when it comes to this, raising your voice means that you're emotional and if you're emotional you can't focus on the main thing and the main thing is to get your message across well.

Because when you're emotional, things like this happen.

You say things that you don't want to say, you raise your voice, you do body language that kind of tells that you are emotional and this is affecting you.

We always want to be calm as a leader.

If there's something and there's some issue, you want to be able to actually calm down first before you address it.

CEO OF SPH -

Thank you, Chairman.

JASON -

Ah, that's nice.

He said thank you!

[LEARNING POINT]
So from this we can learn that main thing.

Really main thing - communication as a leader is so important.

Hyper important guys.

Three parts - Words that you use. Body language that you're showing, no pointing, and even what? Tonality. Tonality, raising your voice is a big issue.

So learn these lessons as a leader understand that emotions affect all of us.

What we do to the emotions?

We can't we can't change the emotions we have, but what we do to it while we are having those emotions?

Be very clear that you are sending the right signals to your people.

Not one of anger, not one of being irritated, but one of like i understand where you're coming from.

So if there's other reaction videos that you think is worth to break down in terms of leadership and what leadership lessons we can learn, let me know, give me a shout out we'll do it man.

Till next time, peace out.

This is your leadership coach, Jason and I'll see you next time.
